Giveaway : Orly Space Cadet

Orly Space Cadet
(Photo added August 29, 2010)

I’m sure you know by now how obsessed I’ve become with nail colors. Part of the reason is that I use my hands all the time — knitting, crocheting, blogging, and even reading on my Kindle — so I’m always aware of my hands now and I want them to look nice. I’ve been getting adventurous with nail colors and trying out the ones that look fun or unique.

I recently discovered a ton of nail polish blogs (who knew?!) and I’ve come across a few “must-have” limited edition polishes. The majority of them don’t really register with me and I just look and move along, but the new Orly Cosmic FX line was intriguing enough for me to go in search of this popular color:

Orly Space Cadet

In the bottle, it appears to be purple with green undertones, but the color shifts depending on the light.

This YouTube video shows the bottles and swatches. I love them all, but I had to have the Space Cadet — so I got one for myself and one for a lucky blog reader! Stylespotting.com is generously sponsoring this giveaway. If we get a huge response, she’s agreed to spring for another one of the new Cosmic FX colors for one of our lucky readers. Simply leave a comment here and share with your friends. I’ll be painting my own nails with it this weekend (photos to follow). Done! I added the photo to the top of this blog entry. It’s amazing!

NYPD Beet : Nail Color of the Week

Nail Color of the Week

After a really horrible manicure two weeks ago, I’m finally convinced to just STOP paying somebody else to do my nails (typically no more than three times a year anyway).

This week’s color is a discontinued OPI color: NYPD Beet. It’s a great year-round purple/red shade.

Paradoxal

CHANEL Paradoxal

I decided to try my CHANEL Paradoxal nail polish when Lisa Eldridge blogged it. Hers photographed more purple than mine but I think the nature of this color is that it looks different depending on the lighting. Had I not cut my nails, I wouldn’t have attempted this color – it’s too much for longer nails.

And I’m also using my new mini lotion bar:

Bar Maids Lo-Lo Bar

The lotion bars smell great and I love using it before knitting.

Tomorrow – actual knitting content!

Boring Browns

Boring Browns

I used a cotton swab to apply eye shadow color swatches in my notebook — it’s a handful of bland and boring browns. I have a photo from the 80′s when I wore blue eye shadow and I only had to see it once to decide not to do it again! Purple makes me look like a zombie (even though it’s always recommended to people with brown eyes — purple looks horrible on me), and green is always so tempting, yet very unflattering. I’ve never been one to match eye shadow with outfits, so I don’t have a wardrobe of colors — it’s simply the SAME thing every day: brown eyeshadow, black eyeliner, and black mascara. I’m always on the look out for the perfect brown, however, and the notebook swatches will make it easier.

Nail Color - Field Notes

After shopping for nail color and cosmetics a couple of times in the last few weeks and trying to decide if I already had something similar at home, I finally put together this little notebook to carry with me that includes swatches of all the colors I own in nail polish, lipstick, eye liner and eyeshadows. I almost hate to admit how many different shades of brown eyeshadow I own, or that I realized that I’ve been wearing the same colors since I was 16.

Mariachi : Nail Color of the Week

Mariachi : Nail Color of the Week

Due to timing, chipped polish and Erica’s availability, I changed my nail polish color earlier than I intended. This color makes me smile! It reminds me of my favorite shade from the 90′s.

Remember my unpleasant Chanel make-up counter experience last week? I went back to grab one of the new Fall 2010 nail polishes (too dark to wear right now and definitely not a color for long nails) and spoke to a different sales associate who completely won me over. I filled out a customer profile and told her to call me whenever there’s something new. I decided to go ahead and purchase my investment lipstick too. It’s not a bad idea to get a luxurious new lipstick every four years, right? This one’s Chanel Rouge Allure “Mystery.” It’s a perfect shade. It looks browner than it really is.

Chanel : investment pieces

The nail polish is an industrial-looking plum/grey — “Paradoxal” — one of two new Fall 2010 nail colors. It’s a bit too dramatic for summer, but would be perfect for Fall and Winter. I’m saving it for short nails.

Paradoxal

And yes. I’m definitely still knitting — there’s just little to show for it while there are fewer chances of good photo ops (too cloudy).

Bogota Blackberry

I painted my own nails this week and managed to do an okay job. I got through that unbearably long time it seems to take for my nails to dry by starting the Kindle sample of The Passage, by Houstonian Justin Cronin. I made it through the sample and couldn’t wait to read the rest, so I downloaded it. The book wasn’t even on my radar, but Lolly’s Goodreads review made it sound irresistible. It has almost all of the elements I enjoy in an epic novel – dystopian science fiction, strong female characters, and an undertone of horror. When I was younger, I loved Stephen King’s The Stand and this feels a little bit like that so far. And I totally forgot about my nails.

Bogota Blackberry

OPI Bogota Blackberry: not really a summer color, but still an old favorite. I visited the Chanel counter at Macy’s last week with the intention of getting a nail color as a splurge (the object of my obsession was Particuliere), but the one person working at the counter that day couldn’t be bothered — even if I was the only customer. I moved along.

Shhhh . . . it’s so quiet

It’s certainly been quiet here in my virtual space, hasn’t it? There are any number of reasons, including the fact that my former blog’s main page no longer exists. The archives are still intact, however, and no links are broken, but due to some Dreamhost server moves, it’s just no longer there. I think that’s probably a message from the universe.

So if you’ve found me in spite of that, thank you!

Orly "Rage" on Erica and Me

I’ve not had a salon manicure since sometime last year, so during my birthday week, I treated myself to one. I had super-high expectations but was totally disappointed in the results. So I sent out an SOS to my nearest favorite nail tech (Erica) and purchased some new nail colors to try out and she painted my nails and hers the same color. (I’m hopeless at shaping and painting the nails on my right hand, so to answer your question – no, I can’t do my own. I did however, give myself a killer pedicure)!

I made the mistake of showing her this Flickr photostream and she promptly favorited several colors and told me which one she’s expecting me to buy for next week’s manicure. Can you guess which one? Luckily, Orly’s not as pricey as one of the Chanel nail lacquers I had my eye on.
